Post-it Power!

Post-it notes are magic and an ESSENTIAL part of helping my son with his school organization.

Post-its are amazing for 3 simple reasons:

1. They are bright and standout

  • Perfect for reminding your child or person to take action.

  • Perfect brain trigger to implement your strategy for a problem

2. They are workable, bitesize pieces of information

  • Because they are small, you can’t put too much on them. This is perfect for your neurodivergent child

  • Your child doesn’t have to sift through too much information when reading a sticky note. They don’t need to process too much. They don’t use up too much working memory.

3. They can be placed exactly, where they are needed.

  • Your child doesn’t have to search for help. It’s right there! On the page, next to the question, beside a diagram, or stuck next to where they will need to access the information.

  • Scanning a page with a lot words or information can be difficult for dyspraxics, dyslexics, dyscalculics and individuals with other learning disabilities. When reading, or trying to process information, these children can often lose their place. Post-its can help direct their eyes to the task, or where they need to pay attention. They can be used often and anywhere.

Post-It Making Tips:

  • Make sure the information is specific

  • Make sure instructions are direct.

  • Reframe information and simplify to maximize Post-it power.

  • Economize words

  • Use them often

  • Use them everywhere

How my family used them. Post-its helped my child:

  • Cue our math strategies

  • Remember math rules

  • Interpret class/subject vocabulary with our own new, reframed vocabulary

  • Recall French conjugations and rules, vocabulary and numbers

  • Provide short-cuts for time-telling strategies

  • Keep place for reading and writing/copying. The Post-it helped mark where my son left off with his reading or writing. As a place holder, he didn’t have to rescan the busy page or sift through the information to get back to his spot.

Post-its are an incredible all-around organization tool, perfect for general reminders and most importantly, for sharing encouragement and love.
